Turn Your REVEAL Diamond Detector Into a Desktop Diamond Verification Instrument
Connect your REVEAL Diamond Detector 2S and 3S to a monitor, keyboard, and mouse to run it as a full desktop workstation, with no mobile app needed for daily screening.
Let's Start
The REVEAL Diamond Detector 2S and 3S do not have to live on your phone. Connect it to a monitor, keyboard, and mouse and it becomes a full desktop workstation, giving your team a larger screen, faster navigation, and a fixed station for high-volume screening. This guide walks through the setup and shows you how to find your way around the desktop interface.
Why QC Teams and Gem Labs Choose Desktop Mode
Desktop mode is the preferred setup for many quality control teams and gemological laboratories, for two reasons.
The first is resolution. Screening is a visual task, and reading fluorescence and phosphorescence patterns is easier and more confident on a large, high-resolution monitor than on a phone. Every detail of the stone or piece of jewelry is shown at full size, which is exactly what a QC or lab environment needs.
The second is reliability. Because a desktop setup runs over cables, the device does not depend on a Wi-Fi network to analyze items. Analyses are saved to the device and sync to the cloud whenever it is online, so a slow or dropped network never stops your team from working. That means no downtime from connectivity issues, and uninterrupted screening even when the network is not.
Before You Start
You can set up a brand-new REVEAL Diamond Detector 2S or 3S entirely through desktop mode, no mobile app required. Connect your monitor, keyboard, and mouse first, then power on the device. If this is the device's first use, a setup wizard appears directly on the monitor to walk you through initial configuration. If the device has already been configured, either through the app or through this wizard, it goes straight to the home screen instead.
You will need the following:
- Monitor with an HDMI input. We always recommend at least Full HD (1920 x 1080) resolution, so that every detail of the stone or piece of jewelry is shown clearly during screening.
- HDMI cable to connect the monitor to the device.
- Keyboard and mouse, either wired USB or a wireless dongle.
- USB barcode scanner (optional), if you want to name and save analyses by SKU, covered in the section below.
Setting Up Desktop Mode
- Connect the monitor to the device with an HDMI cable.
- Plug your keyboard and mouse into the USB ports, or insert the wireless dongle.
- Press the power button and wait for the device to start.
- If this is the device's first use, a setup wizard appears, follow the on-screen steps to complete configuration. Otherwise, the interface loads directly and the device is ready to use.
Getting to Know the Home Screen
Once the device starts, the home screen gives you an at-a-glance view of the device status and everything you need to begin working. It is organized into a few key areas.
Cloud synchronization status shows whether the device is connected to the cloud and whether your analyses are backed up. Network information shows the details of the network the device is currently connected to. Profile and REVEAL settings hold your user settings and device configuration options.
You will start and review your screening work from two sections on this screen: Reveal Analysis, where you run a new screening, and Saved Analyses, where past results are stored. We cover both in detail, including how to start, name, and review an analysis on the desktop interface, in a separate article.
Starting an Analysis
Select Reveal Analysis on the home screen to begin a new screening.
- Place the stone or piece of jewelry in the analysis area.
- Watch the live camera view on the monitor and adjust the position of the item until it sits clearly in view.
- Start the analysis.
- The device captures images under different exposures for each modality: Daylight, Deep UV (fluorescence) and Phosphorescence. The REVEAL Diamond Detector 3S adds Long UV as a fourth mode.
- Review the images on the monitor. On the REVEAL Diamond Detector 3S, auto-detection also gives a result for each stone: Natural, Potential Lab-Grown, Potential Simulant or Undetermined. If a stone shows Undetermined, reposition it and run it again.
- Give the analysis a name, add a description if you need one, and save it.
- An analysis will not save on the cloud or the device automatically unless you click to save the analysis.
This is where the larger screen pays off. Fluorescence and phosphorescence patterns appear at full size on the monitor, so your team can read each stone with confidence and switch between modes with a click.
For the full walkthrough of the screening process, including how to read each mode, see Analyzing With REVEAL Diamond Detector 3S and 2S.
Scan SKUs With a Barcode Scanner
Desktop mode also supports a USB barcode scanner, which is a fast way to keep your records tied to the right item. Plug the scanner into a free USB port and scan an item's SKU to enter it directly into the analysis name, instead of typing it by hand.
Each analysis is then saved under its SKU, so your screening records line up with your inventory and orders and are easy to find later. For QC teams and gem labs moving through high volumes, this keeps naming accurate and removes a manual step from every save.
Tip: most USB barcode scanners work as plug-and-play keyboards, so no setup is needed on the device. If the scanned characters come out wrong, check that the Keyboard setting under Reveal Settings > General matches the layout your scanner uses.
Viewing Your Saved Analyses
Select Saved Analyses on the home screen to open your screening history. From here you can:
- Open analyses saved locally on the device and review earlier results whenever you need them.
- Search for an analysis by name or SKU.
- Sync your analyses to the cloud, so they can be reviewed later on my.jtr.org or in the myREVEAL app.
Analyses are always saved to the device first, so your work is never lost when the network drops. As soon as the device is online again, they sync to the cloud automatically. Every REVEAL comes with complimentary storage for 50 saved analyses on the My.JTR cloud.
For more detail, see Viewing and Reviewing Saved Analyses With REVEAL Diamond Detector 3S and 2S.
The Settings Menu
To open the settings, select the profile icon in the top right corner of the home screen, next to the cloud and Wi-Fi icons, then select Reveal Settings. The settings are arranged in tabs on the left-hand side.
- General covers everyday preferences: language, keyboard layout, country and time zone, sleep time and background. This is also where you find the Check for Updates button to keep the device current. Software updates for your REVEAL are lifetime and included with the device.
- Account lets you log in and manage who has access to the device, including user management and permission controls.
- The REVEAL Diamond Detector will ask for a login when being used with a monitor for the first time.
- Network connects the device to the internet over Wi-Fi or a wired connection. Select an available Wi-Fi network to connect, or click the connected network to view its details. For a wired connection, plug a USB to Ethernet adapter into the device. The adapter is not included with the device.
- About Reveal shows your system information and holds the maintenance options, including factory reset, reverting to a previous version and managing updates.
