Reveal Network Connection Guide: Wi-Fi, Ethernet, USB Tethering, and Direct Connection Mode

Every way to get your REVEAL Diamond Detector 3S & 2S online, from office Wi-Fi to your phone's connection, plus the September networking update that brings full support for modern IPv6 mobile networks.

Intro

Your REVEAL is a diamond screening device first and a connected device second, and that order matters. Screening never stops when the network does. Analyses are always written to the device itself and sync to your my.jtr.org account the moment a connection returns.

That said, a connected device is a more useful one. It syncs your analyses, updates itself, and lets your team reach results from anywhere. This guide covers every way to get a REVEAL Diamond Detector 3S & 2S online, and what to do when a connection does not behave.

What Changed in the September Update

This release rebuilt how the REVEAL Diamond Detector 3S & 2S handle networks, and it delivers three things.

USB tethering. Your REVEAL can now use a phone's cellular connection over a single USB cable. No dongles, no docks, no network configuration.

Full support for modern mobile networks. Several major mobile carriers now run IPv6-only networks. Devices that expect the older addressing scheme can connect to these networks, appear connected, and still fail to reach anything at all. Your REVEAL now takes its network configuration from the network it joins rather than assuming, so it works correctly on IPv6-only, IPv4-only, and dual-stack networks alike. JTR's own services were upgraded alongside the device, so a REVEAL now reaches JTR infrastructure directly on either address family instead of relying on a carrier to translate on its behalf.

To get all of this, update your device. Open REVEAL Settings > General > Check for Updates and install any available update. Software updates are complimentary for the life of the device and never require a subscription.

Connecting to Wi-Fi

This is the standard setup for a fixed screening station or a retail counter.

  1. On the home screen, open REVEAL Settings from the top right corner.
  2. Select Network.
  3. Choose your network from the list of available Wi-Fi networks.
  4. Enter the network password and confirm.

Click any network in the list to see the details of the connection you are on.

From the myREVEAL app

Before you start: the app has to be able to reach the device.

Network settings are held on the REVEAL itself, so the app can only change them while it has a path to the device. Any one of these works:

  1. The REVEAL is tethered to your phone over USB
  2. The REVEAL is in Direct Connection Mode and your phone or tablet has joined its network
  3. The REVEAL and your phone or tablet are on the same local network, by Wi-Fi or by Ethernet

If you are setting up a brand new network and the device is not online yet, Direct Connection Mode is the way in. Press and hold the Wi-Fi button on the device for six seconds to start it, join the JTRRDD network from your phone, then add your Wi-Fi network in the app. Full steps are in the Direct Connection Mode section below.

For a great many customers this is the main way they work. A REVEAL does not need a monitor, keyboard, and mouse attached to it, and plenty of teams run theirs entirely from a phone. If that is how you work, the app is your route into network settings. It is also the easier option whenever the device sits on a shelf or under a counter where reaching a keyboard is awkward.

  1. Open the myREVEAL app and go to Devices.
  2. Tap your REVEAL.
  3. Select Network from the menu.
  4. Choose a network from the list and enter its password.
  5. Tap Save settings and restart.

The device restarts to apply the change, which is expected. It comes back on the network you selected.

Whichever route you take, the Wi-Fi button blinks green while the device joins your network and connects to my.jtr.org, then turns solid green once it has full access to the portal.

A note for IT departments. The REVEAL needs outbound HTTPS access to JTR services on port 443, and DNS resolution from the network it joins. It works on IPv4-only, IPv6-only, and dual-stack networks. If your network requires an allowlist of destinations, contact JTR support and we will provide the current list for your environment.

Connecting by Ethernet

For laboratories, quality control benches, and anywhere a cable is preferred to a radio, your REVEAL connects to a wired network through a USB to Ethernet adapter.

What you need: a USB to Ethernet adapter and a network cable. The adapter is not included with the device. We test with and recommend the TP-Link UE306, a gigabit USB 3.0 adapter that is plug and play, inexpensive, and widely available. Any comparable gigabit adapter that requires no driver installation will also work.

  1. Plug the adapter into a free USB port on your REVEAL.
  2. Connect your network cable to the adapter.
  3. The device picks up the connection automatically. There is nothing to configure.

The Wi-Fi button blinks green while the device connects to my.jtr.org, then turns solid turquoise once the portal is reachable. Turquoise is the wired indicator, so it is also a useful check: if the button settles on solid green instead, the device has come online over Wi-Fi rather than through your adapter.

Ethernet is the most predictable option in a busy building where Wi-Fi congestion is a daily fact of life, and it is what we recommend for a fixed, high-volume diamond screening station.

USB Tethering: Using Your Phone's Connection

Tethering is the answer to a trade show booth, a client's office, a temporary bench, or any location where there is no network you are willing to trust.

What you need: any iPhone or Android phone with cellular service and Personal Hotspot or tethering support, and a high quality USB data cable. The cable is not included with the device, and it is the single most important thing to get right. See the note below before you buy one.

  1. Enable Personal Hotspot or tethering on your phone.
  2. Connect the phone to a USB port on your REVEAL with a certified data cable.
  3. On an iPhone, unlock the handset and tap Trust when the pairing prompt appears. A locked phone cannot complete pairing.
  4. The device picks up the connection automatically and the Wi-Fi button moves to green as it reaches my.jtr.org.

Once the REVEAL is online through your phone, any laptop joined to that same hotspot can operate the device from a browser, with nothing to install. Full control of your diamond screening device, wherever you happen to be working that day.

Choosing the Right Cable

This is worth two minutes of your attention, because a poor cable is the most common cause of a tethering problem and it is the hardest one to spot.

Charge-only USB cables are extremely common and physically identical to data cables. A charge-only cable will power a phone perfectly well and carry no data at all, which produces a connection that looks established and moves nothing. Cheap or worn data cables cause the same problem intermittently, which is worse, because the connection works one day and not the next.

What we recommend:

  • For iPhone, use an MFi certified cable. MFi is Apple's Made for iPhone certification programme, and a certified cable carries the logo on its packaging. Certification is your assurance that the cable handles data properly and will keep working across iOS updates. Uncertified cables are the usual culprit behind a phone that pairs and then carries nothing.
  • For Android, use a quality data cable from a reputable brand, specified for data transfer rather than charging only.
  • Avoid the cable that came bundled with something else. Promotional cables, in-flight cables, and hotel drawer cables are very often charge-only.
  • Keep a known-good cable at the bench. If tethering ever misbehaves, swapping the cable is the fastest way to rule out the most likely cause in under a minute.

A good certified cable costs very little against the time a bad one takes from your day.

Direct Connection Mode: No Network at All

When there is no network and no phone signal, the REVEAL creates its own connection to your phone or tablet, and screening carries on completely offline.

  1. Press and hold the Wi-Fi button for six seconds, then release. This works from any starting state.
  2. The button begins to glow blue slowly, which means the device is broadcasting and ready.
  3. On your phone or tablet, open Wi-Fi settings and join the network named JTRRDD followed by your device serial number, for example JTRRDD-3001293842. There is no password. If several JTR devices are nearby, check the serial number so you connect to the right one.
  4. The button turns solid blue once your phone or tablet is connected.
  5. Open the myREVEAL app and work as normal.

In the app, Connection status reads Available and Internet status reads Offline. That is correct and expected in Direct Connection Mode. Analyses are saved to the device's internal memory and sync to the cloud automatically the next time it is online.

Direct Connection Mode is covered in full in Using REVEAL Direct Connection Mode with the myREVEAL App.

Troubleshooting

The button blinks blue rapidly. The device found no network it recognises. Open REVEAL Settings > Network and select your network from the list, or start Direct Connection Mode if there is no network available.

Tethering shows a connection but no data. This is almost always the cable. Swap to a known-good MFi certified cable, or a quality data cable on Android, before looking anywhere else. If the screen reports that no data is being received from your phone, that message is telling you the same thing.

The Ethernet adapter is connected but the button settles on solid green rather than turquoise. Green means the device came online over Wi-Fi, not through your adapter. Check that the adapter is a plug and play model that needs no driver, and that the network cable is seated in both the adapter and the wall port. Try a different USB port on the device.

An iPhone will not pair. Unlock the phone and accept the trust prompt on the handset. Pairing cannot complete while the screen is locked.

Tethering connects but the phone shows no hotspot data moving. On a dual SIM phone, Personal Hotspot runs on whichever line is set as the cellular data line. If that line is roaming, your home carrier may block tethering entirely. Check which line is active before assuming a device fault.

The device is online but the app or a browser cannot find it. Check which network it joined. A guest network keeps connected devices isolated from each other, so the REVEAL will sync to the cloud normally and still be unreachable from your phone or computer. The same applies to a separate guest VLAN on a business network. Move the device to your main network.

The device is online but analyses are not syncing. Confirm the button is solid green or solid turquoise rather than blinking. A blinking light means the network is joined but my.jtr.org has not been reached, which usually points to a captive portal login, a firewall rule, or a network that requires sign-in. Keep screening in the meantime. Nothing is lost, and everything syncs once the portal is reachable.

Nothing above applies. Restart the device, then contact JTR support with your serial number.

Screening Never Depends on the Network

It is worth repeating, because it is the part that protects your working day. A REVEAL Diamond Detector 3S & 2S performs every analysis on the device itself. Network trouble delays synchronisation. It does not stop diamond screening, it does not hold your results hostage, and it never requires a subscription to keep working. Some of the best known names in diamond detection require an active subscription simply to operate hardware their customers already own. Your REVEAL is yours.
