Connecting Your REVEAL Diamond Detector to Wi-Fi

Connect your REVEAL Diamond Detector 3S & 2S to a Wi-Fi network, from the device itself or from the myREVEAL app, and understand what the Wi-Fi button is telling you.

Intro

Wi-Fi is the standard setup for a fixed screening station, a retail counter, or any bench that sits inside your own building. It takes about a minute, and there are two ways to do it. Both reach the same settings, so use whichever matches the way your team works.

Before anything else, one reassurance. Your REVEAL is a diamond screening device first and a connected device second. Analyses are always written to the device itself and sync to your my.jtr.org account the moment a connection returns. Network trouble delays synchronisation. It never stops diamond screening.

Setting Up Wi-Fi from the myREVEAL App

For a great many customers this is the main way they work. A REVEAL does not need a monitor, keyboard and mouse attached to it, and plenty of teams run theirs entirely from a phone. The app is also the easier option whenever the device sits on a shelf or under a counter where reaching a keyboard is awkward.

Before you start: the app has to be able to reach the device.

Network settings are held on the REVEAL itself, so the app can only change them while it has a path to the device. Any one of these works:

  • The REVEAL is tethered to your phone over USB
  • The REVEAL is in Direct Connection Mode and your phone or tablet has joined its network
  • The REVEAL and your phone or tablet are already on the same local network
  1. Open the myREVEAL app and go to Devices.
  2. Tap your REVEAL. The device you use most can be marked Primary Device so it always appears first.
  3. Select Network. This opens WiFi Settings, with the network the device is currently on shown at the top.
  4. Under Nearby Wi-Fi Networks, find your network and tap the + beside it. Tap Refresh if it has not appeared yet.
  5. Enter the Wi-Fi password and tap Add to Reveals Networks.
  6. A Save Settings & Restart button now appears at the bottom of the WiFi Settings screen. Tap it.
Step 1 - Tap Devices
Step 2 - Tap Your Device
Step 3 - Tap network
Step 4 - Select Wi-Fi
Step 5 - Enter Password
Step 6 - Tap "Save Settings & Restart"

The device restarts to apply the change, which is expected, and comes back on the network you added. The network it is currently using is marked with a green Connected badge.

If Your Network Is Not in the List

Tap Enter Custom Wi-Fi to add it by hand. You will need the network name typed exactly and the password. This is how you add a hidden network, one that does not broadcast its name, and it is also the answer when a network is simply not appearing after a refresh.

Networks Saved on Device

Below the nearby networks, Networks Saved on Device lists every network your REVEAL remembers, in the order it will try them.

The device reconnects to a saved network automatically when it comes into range, so you can add your bench network and your showroom network once and then move the device between them with nothing to reconfigure. The same applies to a second site, or a manager's office.

Set the order yourself. Drag a network by the handle on its left to move it up or down the list. The device works down the list and joins the first saved network it can find, so put the one you want it to prefer at the top.

That matters wherever more than one saved network is in range at once. Put your main network above a fallback, or the strong bench access point above the weaker one at the far end of the room, and the device will choose correctly every time without anyone having to think about it.

Remove what you no longer need. The bin deletes a saved network. Worth doing for a site you have left, an event network you used once, or an old guest network. A shorter list means a quicker, more predictable connection at power on.

The pencil edits an entry, for instance when a Wi-Fi password changes. The network currently in use also shows a gear for its connection details.

Reordering, editing and deleting are all changes like any other, so tap Save Settings & Restart when you are done.

Housekeeping worth doing once a year: remove saved networks you no longer use, particularly at a site you have left. The more networks stored, the slower reveal connects to you wi-fi, since it cycles trough all of them

Do Not Put Your REVEAL on a Guest Network

This is the single most common Wi-Fi mistake, and the symptom is confusing enough to be worth stating plainly.

Guest networks are built to keep connected devices isolated from one another, which is exactly what you do not want here. A REVEAL on a guest network can reach the internet perfectly well, sync every analysis, and still be completely invisible to your phone and to any computer trying to open it in a browser, because the network blocks devices from seeing each other.

Connect the device to your main network, the same one your team's phones and computers use. The same applies to a separate guest VLAN on a business network.

You may use Guest Networks, only if you are using your REVEAL Diamond Detector 3S / 2S in Desktop / Stand Alone Mode. Guest networks allow reveal to connect to my.jtr.org and get the latest updates and sync analysis. But keep in mind, as explained above, you may not be able to reach your REVEAL from your mobile devices.

Setting Up Wi-Fi on the Device

Use this route when the REVEAL has a monitor, keyboard and mouse attached, or when you are working in desktop mode.

  1. On the home screen, click the profile icon in the top right corner.
  2. Select Reveal Settings.
  3. Choose Network from the menu on the left.
  4. Under WiFi, find your network in the Available Networks list. Click Refresh Connection List if it has not appeared yet.
  5. Click the Wi-Fi network you want to connect to. The NETWORK CONNECTION dialog opens.
  6. Type the Wi-Fi password and click Connect. The eye icon at the end of the field shows what you have typed, which is worth using since passwords are case-sensitive.

Click any network in the list to see the details of the connection you are on.

Step 1 - click profile icon
Step 1 - Click Reveal Settings
Step 2 - Click Network
Step 3 - Click wi-fi
Step 4 - Enter Password

What the Connection Button Light Is Telling You

The button on the front of the device reports its connection state at a glance.

Light Meaning
Blinking blueNo network found, or no saved network on the device
Blinking greenConnected to a network and connecting to my.jtr.org
Solid green Connected over Wi-Fi with full access to my.jtr.org

Solid green is the state you are aiming for. Blinking green means the network is joined but the portal has not been reached yet.

A Note for IT Departments

The REVEAL needs outbound HTTPS access to JTR services on port 443, and DNS resolution from the network it joins. It works on IPv4-only, IPv6-only, and dual-stack networks. If your network requires an allowlist of destinations, contact JTR support and we will provide the current list for your environment.

Troubleshooting

The button blinks blue rapidly.

The device found no network it recognises. Open REVEAL Settings > Network and select your network from the list, or start Direct Connection Mode if there is no network available.

The device is online but the app or a browser cannot find it.

Check which network it joined. This is almost always a guest network or a guest VLAN, as described above. Move the device to your main network.

The light stays blinking green and never turns solid.

The network is joined but my.jtr.org has not been reached. That usually points to a captive portal login, a firewall rule, or a network that requires sign-in. Keep screening in the meantime. Nothing is lost, and everything syncs once the portal is reachable.

Wi-Fi is congested and the connection is unreliable.

In a busy building, a wired connection is the more predictable choice for a fixed, high-volume screening station. See Connecting Your REVEAL Diamond Detector to a Wired Network.

Nothing above applies.

Restart the device, then contact JTR support with your serial number.
